January’s client of the month is Hazel Van Opzeeland, a passionate owner, breeder and enthusiast of harness racing.
Hazel was first introduced to harness racing in 2007 when former neighbour Michael House took home a magnificent looking black colt from the PGG Wrightson Yearling sales. This colt was none other than Highview Tommy, winner of 15 races including a Group 1, three Group 2’s, two Group 3’s and two Listed races.
Highview Tommy is currently racing in Australia for Hazel and co-owners Glenys and Phillip Kennard.
Hazel is also racing Highview Tommy’s full-brother Highview Teejay a three-year-old gelding, who has already won 3 races in this his first season!
Hazel not only enjoys racing her horses but has also entered into breeding this year. Highview Chasue and Highview Chartom both full sisters, have embarked on their broodmare career, they are both confirmed in foal to Rock N Roll Heaven this season.
JLT have insured Hazel’s ‘pride and joys’ since she has been involved in the industry and Hazel had this to say about the company:
“JLT are a great company to deal with. I was in the unfortunate position of having to claim recently and the team were really helpful, understanding and prompt in getting the claim settled.”
When asked about what is the best part of owning a standardbred racehorse, Hazel remarked:
“I dearly love the horses themselves, the fun and excitement you experience when racing is amazing and the friendships forged priceless.”
Hazel has continued her passion for harness racing and breeding and now works for Woodlands Stud in Clevedon.
Woodlands is owned by Veterinarians Dr Charles Roberts and Dr Andrew Grierson and stands Bettor’s Delight, American Ideal, Pegasus Spur and Crazed.
Hands Christian finally gets his just reward

If any pacer deserved to win a Group race it's Hands Christian. The 4-year-old finally broke through for the biggest win of his 23-start harness racing career when nailing the Group Two $40,000 JLT Futurity Stakes at Cambridge Raceway tonight (Friday January 13).
The Mark Purdon and Grant Payne trained gelding was three deep and then parked before out-staying a quality field of 4 & 5-year-olds. It was his ninth win in 23 starts. He was having his first start at Cambridge.
Driver Purdon said he was delighted that the son of Christian Cullen finally broke through for a big win.
"That was a tough win tonight. He never flinched. He's been a bit unlucky in his career and has placed behind some nice horses. Tonight it was his turn to win. He will stay in Auckland and target the Taylor Mile and the New Zealand Messenger in April and May," Purdon said.
Hands Christian paced 2700m standing start event in 3:22.60 (mile rate: 1:58) with final 800m and 400m sprints of 57 and 27.6 seconds.
The pace-making Easy On The Eye (Zac Butcher) and Gold Ace (Peter Ferguson) - who will be better for the run - finished second and third, a neck and 1-3/4 back. The winning time was a C5 track record.
Father-son owners Dennis and Mark Dunford have given a lot to harness racing over the years and usually get Purdon to pick them out a yearling at the Sales each year. "We will be back at the Sales again this year. We leave all in Mark's hands. We do the same when our horses race. Mark has all the say and we go along with it. It's a privilege to have a horse in the top stable in New Zealand.
"Mark has been very good to us over the years and we can't speak highly enough of his horsemanship," Dennis said.
The pair said Hands Christian was the best pacer they had raced and were excited with his future. "He has placed twice behind Gold Ace in Group One races and we know how good that horse is. It's a great feeling to beat a horse like that in a race like this. We are delighted that he has finally broken through for a Group win," Dennis said.
The duo have owned some nice horses in the past including Steve McQueen three races and $179,835. His biggest win was the $200,000 NZ Yearling Sales Open for 2yo pacers at Addington Raceway, back in 2007.
Hands Christian has now won $184,000. He was bred by Charlie Roberts of Auckland.
